At-a-glance Tour to FMT's World: Structure, Beauty, Concept

Overview

(A note: automatic translation is available via the menu at the top left. Please select your preferred language.)

FMT is a music unit based in Japan, consisting of two members: TM and TI.

Under the concept of “creating the kind of music we wish existed but cannot find in the world,” FMT released more than 100 tracks on SoundCloud, and distributes several albums via subscription-based streaming services on over 30 platforms. The listener base is mainly located in the Americas and Europe. Many works are created in collaboration with guest artists who share a similar creative orientation.

Among its major works the Cube series (Le Cube Dans Mon Rêve) is to be released as both albums and singles through Kitchen. Label in 2025, and continues to gain international attention.

All of FMT's works are composed with a clearly defined artistic concept. The music is not produced from abstract intuition alone, but based on verbalized intent. With the exception of early releases, every track is accompanied by a detailed written commentary—available in English here on this website and French.

Compositions are created primarily using digital notation, and the works are recorded without the use of acoustic / electric / electronic instruments. As a result, the sound reaches the listener with minimal mediation through air.

Through this approach, FMT aims to explore the “structure” of music itself, using means only possible in digital composition. This practice is referred to as Auditory Art.

🌐NOTES ON OTHER SERIES

FMT typically works within a larger conceptual framework, producing music as a “series” of related works that are structured with album formats in mind.

These series are released on streaming platforms as digital albums.

Below are several major examples, listed in chronological order:

📀 Swambient Series (latest)

An experiment combining “sway” and “ambient” perspectives, beginning with the question: “Has ambient music become musically uninteresting?” It explores dynamic interpretations of environment.

📀 Album Placid Wanderings

A travel-themed project that pursues “beauty” without relying on tonality or harmonic structure -- an approach unique to FMT.

📀 Project Boyhood Skies

A reconstruction of musical influences from TM and TI’s childhood, reinterpreted through the lens of FMT.

📀 Album The Anomalous Folk

Based on the concept of “folk music of nowhere,” the album features digital compositions centered around four symbolic directions drawn from religious cosmology.

📀 Album Auditory Art For Visual Arts

A series of compositional and acoustic experiments exploring mathematical structure through auditory illusions, symmetry, and stereo spatialization.

📀 Album Newfangled Hotel Ambience

Originating from the question: “What if live hotel music could sound entirely different?” This series presents a collection of digital groove pieces with atonal elements.

📀 Album Unphysical

FMT’s first published album -- a compilation that reflects the non-physicality inherent in digital music.
