NEUEROSE by VU METRICS
(TI writes:)
VU METRICS approached us with a request to create a reworking of “NEUEROSE,” originally released in 2017.
I provided the score, the MIDI data, and the WAV file. The piece had originally been conceived as a song with vocals (which is why the version FMT released was a Karaoke Edit). Along with these materials, I also sent a series of fragmentary English phrases—hardly lyrics—collected from novels and poems that had inspired the work, as well as several visual references.
As with Ein.garden and SHELLLIFE, the identity of the other party was unclear. But that was not particularly an issue. After all, VU METRICS itself is not entirely clear.
Some time later, a file arrived.
Unlike FMT’s version, the track had been shortened. It was also astonishingly catchy. Yet every element we had provided was fully incorporated. It felt like the song I had wanted to hear back in 1985—one I had never actually encountered until now.
The quality is extremely high. It is certainly something FMT composed, yet not something FMT could have completed in this way.
The vocalist seems to sing the word “NEUEROSE” so that it can be heard as both “new eros” and “new rose.”
Perhaps NEUEROSE is both—a new rose and a new eros.
So the vocalist is called Barbara. Not Rachel. Not Morii.
By the way, what does “108” mean?
I still do not know who they are. Yet they appear to know quite a lot about us.
This collaboration may continue, or it may not.
There is nothing more I can say at this time.
